Sunday Read: Top 10 Songs featuring Moscato

Hundreds of French wines for your enjoyment.

Disclaimer: I entered into a tentative agreement with the online wine retailer Wine Chateau under which they sponsor two of my posts per month. Wine Chateau has no influence on the topic I select for the post or its content. Opinions expressed are all mine.

Ok, this was too good to pass up. I stumbled across this video slideshow via Smartaboutwine, a very dedicated blog that compiles interesting news stories surrounding wine. I am subscribed to it and have definitely used some of the ideas for my Sunday Read.

Apparently, and completely unbeknownst to me (but that doesn’t say much…), Moscato of all wines has become quite the rage among youngsters in the US, with sales climbing sharply (over $300 million in the US and doubling of sales in Canada in 2011). Whether that is due to the fact that the sweet wine has been featured in at least ten song lyrics or not might be up for debate, but it is definitely noteworthy…The Drinks Business therefore felt it was time to compile a slide show of music videos featuring Moscato in their lyrics.

And so, here it comes: the Top 10 Moscato Songs…weird. Definitely weird. The true reason I am posting this is to impress my buddy The Food and Wine Hedonist, who is so much cooler than I am, by at least once linking to a video slide show that includes pop and hip hop…:) I am feeling so badass right now.

Have a great Sunday!!

Sunday Read: Thursday Rant – 55 degrees

I SUCK at timing posts…this was meant for tomorrow, but the heck. Hope you’re having a great Saturday!

My fellow wine blogger Jeff, The Drunken Cyclist, has a great column on his blog called “Thursday Rant”. In it, he takes it out on all sorts of topics wine-related, from charging for wine tastings to poor service at winery tasting rooms and other rant-worthy objects. It is a joy to read him rant and last week’s struck a chord in particular:

Jeff wrote about storing temperatures for wine. Discussions and helpful tips on blogs and wine “help” sites abound and there seems to be a need for some guidance on this topic. There is a whole industry out there, trying to make money out of wine storing: wine refrigerator makers from small to huge, whole cellar builders, wine banks and others want you to believe that under no circumstance should you store wine other than at the perfect conditions: in a humid enough place, dark and at a constant temperature of exactly 12 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit). I don’t want to take away from Jeff’s rant, you should just know that I totally agree with him…

Jeff’s blog is also a finalist in the Wine Blogs Awards 2013 category “Best Writing”, so hop on over and vote for him, if you enjoy his writing as much as I do.

Sunday Read: Re: Wine Tasting is Bullshit

The other day, I came across the blog post I am linking to at the end of this article. I had not seen the post that triggered this response, but it made me read the initial post as well. You can find the initial post here, in which a Robert T. Gonzalez explains why, in his opinion, wine tasting is BS. I guess the title ensured that the hits on his blog increased a lot…hell, I even helped him if you clicked the link.

Here is Gonzalez’ premise (roughly and subjectively summarized): Wine tasting produces different results according to the taster, tasters are stupid, and wine critics know that tasting is BS.

I read Gonzalez’ article and just thought: Yeah, pretty much everyone knows these issues. But that is not what it is about. Tasting is not about reaching scientific results. And we all know what we do has to be taken with a grain of salt (or residual sugar, in my case!). The article was self-righteous and sensational, when there was really nothing to be self-righteous about or sensational about the issue…I just found it petulant.

And then I read The Gray Report’s response to Gonzalez’ rant. It is thoughtful and measured. And he said something that made sense to me: Gonzalez’ critique applies to all critics, be they movie, theatre, food or literary critics. If you believe there is a place for that art form, then Gonzalez’ article seems banal and mewh, or blurgh. But when you think there is no place for it, that critique is just a sucking parasite, then I guess Gonzalez’ article made you nod a lot…

I am with The Gray Report and that is why I want you to read his response! Well written, witty, but clear to the point. Just right for a Sunday Read. Happy Sunday!!
